No one loves Krispy Kreme more than yours truly. I grew up in a small town in South Carolina that had two very successful stores and I’m very lucky to have always known the joy of the “Hot Doughnuts Now” sign. And usually, I applaud Krispy Kreme’s forays into new flavors; what a great way to keep us coming back week after week. But there comes a time when bold experimentation reaches its limits. Consider it reached…
A couple of boxes of these new Krispy Kreme Cheerwine Kreme Filled Doughnuts showed up at the station recently.
Of course, I grabbed a box and toted it back over to the Promotions building. (The main building—and the guys in the newsroom—never share with us out in Area 51! Sure, they’ll send out an email saying “pound cake in the breakroom!;” but they never bring us any) Anyway, the half dozen doughnuts are chocolate coated with sprinkles on top and a pink kreme filling flavored to taste like Cheerwine.
Keep in mind, I’m a huge fan of Cheerwine. What could be better than a cherry flavored cola? Love it…and always have.
I gotta hand it to them…they nailed the Cheerwine flavor in the filling. It really does taste like Cheerwine in a sweetly thick form. There’s an initial bold cherry flavor followed by the distinct undercurrent of cola. But there’s something about this combination that doesn’t quite do it for me. It’s weird how the thick, heavy clump of filling just sits there. I would liken it to thick icing rather than a lighter “kreme” filling. And there’s a lot of thickness and flavor in there. I think I would’ve rather seen this as a regular doughnut with the Cheerwine flavor as a ringed topping instead of a huge hunk in the middle of the filled doughnut.
Oh well…let me know when they have a Pepsi flavored doughnuts! Until then, I’ll look forward to the next batch of regular glazed on my next trip to Krispy Kreme.
Saw them in Food Lion, and thought they looked gross -- but then again, I don't like cheerwine, and I'm not a big fan of Krispy Kreme either! :)
